In consultation with the National Weather Service and Leon County Emergency Management we have made the decision to delay school start times tomorrow (4/11/2024) by 1 hour. The National Weather Service and Leon County Emergency Management are predicting that a strong line of thunderstorms will be passing through Leon County between the hours of 3-7am. Therefore, in the abundance of caution, we have made the decision to delay the start of the school day.
In an effort to improve our schools, the Leon County School District is conducting a 2024 Spring Parent/Guardian Climate Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you please take the time to complete this survey based upon your experiences at your child's school. If you have children at multiple school sites (example - one child in elementary school and one child in high school), we respectfully ask that you complete one survey for each school. If your children attend Ft. Braden or Woodville K - 8 School you only need to complete one survey.

Hello Buck Lake Elementary Community, There will be a big change coming with how you receive schoolwide information. Very soon, the Leon County School District will no longer be utilizing the LISTSERV platform for mass messaging.
Below is the reason why: We've received communication from Google/Yahoo that they are implementing enhanced security, which will block spoofed email addresses from bulk email message providers in February (we don't know the specific dates). This means the continued use of our ListServ will not deliver essential messages to all intended recipients once Google/Yahoo completes their implementation.

To LCS parents and school communities-
As Americans living in the melting pot of the world, nearly all of us have a connection to the global community, as well as to past and current events happening around the world. These connections may cause us to feel strongly one way or the other with regard to global conflicts, such as the ones presently occurring in the Middle East, Ukraine, and elsewhere. Our students are witnessing the division on all sides, and of course have their own opinions and reflections.
Hello all, As we move into the season during which many kids share their colds and such with each other, we wanted to remind parents\guardians about when it is best to have your student(s) stay home due to illness. Please see the attached document.

Hello, We have gotten lots of calls about picking students up early today. School still ends at 2:50 but we are not penalizing anyone for leaving early and we may began releasing students to cars that are here a little early to get ahead of potential weather. We will open back gate at 2:15.
Would you like to help guide decisions at Buck Lake? Consider joining the School Advisory Council. The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a decision-making group made-up of school administrators, teachers, parents, community members, and other stakeholders.
The goal of SAC is to assist in making decisions about the mission and educational purpose of the school. Each year, SAC members assist in drafting the goals set forth in the School Improvement Plan and help to monitor the status of these goals throughout the school year. The School Improvement Plan is a living document That helps to guide our academic focus

Hello all, Well as I anticipated, we do have our first "growing pain" with the new dismissal program. Have no fear though, it is an easy fix. We printed QR codes that act as pick up codes rather than parent connection codes like we thought. Using the QR code we provided will not take you straight to registration. (though if you click around it can be done) Your three digit number is correct however.
Wow! I can't believe the school year is here already! With not a whole lot of summer left, we at Buck Lake wanted to drop you a line and get you thinking about the upcoming school year. Let me start by saying how absolutely thrilled and honored I am to be the new principal at Buck Lake. Given my eight years at Swift Creek, I look forward to continuing to serve this wonderful community. Please see the following important updates below:
Please see the message below regarding athletic opportunities at Swift Creek.

I wanted to take a moment to provide you with some news regarding the upcoming school year that I shared with our teachers and staff members this afternoon. Recently, our Superintendent presented me with an opportunity to serve in a new role in our district. It was a very difficult decision, but after a lot of thought and prayer, I have decided to accept the role of Principal of Cobb Middle School. I have loved my time at Buck Lake and it has been my pleasure to serve our families for the past eight years. I have been

Being in the state capital there are many opportunities for our students to participate in off-campus civic events at the request of their parents.
As a follow- up to an email sent on February 14, 2023, please see the paragraph below:
Should a parent/legal guardian choose to allow their student to participate in a civic or legislative event, they should follow LCS attendance policies (LCS Policy 5200) and procedures and sign their student out from school, and/or notify the school of the expected absence and the reason for the absence. Please use caution this afternoon during car pick-up. I have spoken with the supervisor for the road construction project. They have run into some delays in paving the portion of road outside our pick-up lane. The lane will likely be closed and traffic will be directed by flagmen. You may want to consider delaying your arrival time. Our supervision extends until 3:20 p.m. and any students who are not picked up at that time will be brought to the front office. I apologize for this inconvenience.
We continue to have issues with our phone lines. If you need to get a message to your child's teacher, please email them directly. If you need to speak with someone in the office, please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and someone will get back to you.

We had a great night for pledging last night and now we are just $10,000 away from meeting our goal of raising $45,000 for new playground equipment that will be accessible for all students! Tonight is the last night to get pledges and we need everyone to help out. If we meet our goal, Mrs. Quiggins and I will get dressed up as a hamburger and hotdog and students will get to soak us with ketchup and mustard.
We are only a few days away from our Boosterthon Fun Runs. We need your help! We have nearly 200 students that still have not registered for Boosterthon. As of 4:10 p.m., we are at a projected profit of $30,000. We need to boost our pledges over the next two nights to reach our goal of $45,000 for new playground equipment that is accessible for all students including those students who have physical disabilities. If you have already pledged, please spread the word to others through email and social media platforms. If you have not made a pledge,

There are numerous articles on-line about the dangers and health consequences to taking this challenge. Recently, the Leon County Sherriff's Office share information through their social media accounts warning about the challenge's health effects: https://www.instagram.com/p/CiixnBpLeQy/?igshid=NDRkN2NkYzU=.

The 72 hour weather forecast for Leon County does not include any tropical storm force winds in our area with only the possibility for isolated wind gusts between 20-35 mph on both Thursday and Friday. They have also reduced the amount of anticipated rain, as a result of Hurricane Ian, down to less than 1 inch.
Leon County Schools will be open Wednesday, September 28. After consulting with emergency management, shelters will not be opening on our campuses tomorrow which allows school to remain open. We will update tomorrow afternoon if there are any changes to school operations Thursday.

It is time to fill our vacant School Advisory Council positions. The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a decision-making group made-up of school administrators, teachers, parents, community members, and other stakeholders.
The goal of SAC is to assist in making decisions about the mission and educational purpose of the school. Each year, SAC members assist in drafting the goals set forth in the School Improvement Plan and help to monitor the status of these goals.

* You may have noticed that your child has been assigned a homeroom teacher in FOCUS. Please know that these assignments are not final and are subject to change. We have seen a surge in enrollment over the last few weeks that has necessitated us hiring more teachers and shifting some students around. Today at 4 p.m., final class placements will be posted on a bulletin board
I am writing with sad news about one of our Bobcat families. On July 11th, Adam Kulp, father of Claire Kulp, a rising 1st grade Bobcat was killed in an auto accident. I am sharing with our community the Go Fund me account that was set up to assist the family. I know that our community will rally around them in their time of sadness and need. Please consider contributing if you are able.

I am pleased and proud to report that Buck Lake once again earned an "A" rating. In fact, Buck Lake earned more points and had a higher percentage of points earned than every public and charter school in Leon County. Please join me in congratulating our teachers, staff, and students on this amazing accomplishment.
Each year, we give families the opportunity to provide feedback into their child's placement for the upcoming school year. This year, we are moving the form online with Survey Monkey. If you would like to provide input for next year, please complete the survey by Friday, May 20th. As a reminder, requests for specific teachers will not be honored. The survey may be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZTVPQN6.

Thank you to everyone who has prepared our students to show what they know on this year's state assessments! Testing starts this week and I have no doubt our students will do an incredible job.
The 6th Annual #pbjplz drive is kicking off and we want you to participate. Donations to this drive go to help people right here in our community. There are two ways to participate in this worthy cause.
1. Send in unopen plastic jars of Peanut Butter or Jelly. We have donation bins located in the Guidance Hallway near the front office.
We are encouraging everyone to arrive before 8 a.m. because parking is limited. If families park on Pedrick Road, they will need to allow enough time to walk to Alford Greenway.
Due to the impending inclement weather tomorrow, we have had to adjust our Field Day plans. Students will still participate in Field Day events during their Special Area times in our covered areas. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we will not be able to have visitors join us.
The IB Prep Magnet Program at Fairview is an accelerated academic program with a focus on the Global Community. Students are advanced in all curricular areas, not just a few, and have the opportunity to explore world languages, the arts, and computer coding and programming, along challenging and enriching core subjects. Twelve IB Prep teachers, trained in the IB philosophy and curriculum, work in teams at each grade level to provide students with a unique and challenging academic experience. The IB Prep curriculum is based on international standards, giving the accelerated curriculum a focus on the Global Community, along with
Buck Lake families, please check the lost and found rack in the cafeteria to retrieve found items before Monday, December 13. This week, you may sign in at the front office and walk down to the cafeteria (please bring your ID to check in). Mr. Millard will be placing the found items at the front of the school this weekend to give you an opportunity to stop by and look for your lost items. All unclaimed contents will be donated to a local charity after December 13th.
Lucky Goat Coffee Orders have arrived. Smaller orders will be going home today or tomorrow with your child. Larger orders will need to be picked up from the front office during office hours. The office staff is contacting families with larger orders. Thank you for your support!

Per the newly signed Florida Law HB 1B, beginning today, face masks or any other facial coverings will be optional for students and adults on Leon County School's campuses; however, parents may allow their child to wear a face mask or any other facial covering at their sole discretion.
Today, we were notified that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19. If your child was in a classroom with the COVID-19 positive student, you will receive a letter from Focus to your documented email address on file.
We have already contacted anyone considered to be a close contact of the positive case. If you did not receive a phone call or email, there is no further action needed at this time. A close contact is defined as someone who was within six feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes.
This evening we were notified that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully, the family has taken precautions and did not send their child to school while symptomatic. There will be no need for anyone else on the campus to quarantine as a result.
These exposures, unfortunate as they are, highlight the importance of everyone doing their part to minimize the spread of this virus: consider being vaccinated, stay home when sick or while waiting for Covid-19 test results, keep things clean and sanitized, utilize proper hand washing, wear masks, and maintain social distancing.

Unfortunately, due to the rain this morning, we will not be able to complete our Fun Runs for grades 3-5. Instead, students will participate in a Dance Fit Challenge, completing 35 different dances on the basketball courts. We will keep the same schedule for each grade level. Parents are welcome to come.
At the onset of the 2021-2022 School Year parent pick-up lines have created major traffic back-ups and road blockages District-wide. The lack of bus ridership is the main culprit. Schools and the District offices have received a large number of complaints from the public and local businesses.

Do you have an interest in working as a substitute teacher? There's no better time than now. As you may know, LCS is currently experiencing a shortage of Substitute Teachers. As such, we are working hard to ensure appropriate coverage in the classroom to support continued learning and safety while we have staff members out. Because the need for reliable substitutes is often greater than the existing pool, we are asking for your help.
I have some exciting news. Our school is moving away from printed flyers and to a new "electronic backpack" system. Our school has its own online backpack where school information, calendars, activity information from enrichment providers, and school letters will be posted.
We are working with Peachjar on this new system. Just go to the front page of our school website and click on the orange Peachjar button to check it out.

On Sunday, Superintendent Hanna addressed the community and stated that all students in Pre-K through 8th grade will be required to wear a mask while in close contact with others unless they have submitted an updated Medical Opt-Out form. The form requires a physician's signature and stamp from the doctor's office or a note on letterhead from the office.
Please see the following remarks Superintendent Hanna delivered this afternoon in regards to instituting a mask requirement for all Pre-K through eighth grade students. You will have through Friday, August 27th to submit the medical opt-out form. The form is attached.

Dear LCS Families—
Today I reiterated that in order to keep all students safe and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and classrooms, we are temporarily requiring all students, Pre-K to grade 8, to wear face masks while indoors and on buses. For our 9 – 12th grade students who have the opportunity to get vaccinated, masks are strongly encouraged. We will require masks for both Pre-K—grade 8 students and district employees until September 6, Labor Day, when the mask requirement
This morning, Superintendent Hanna announced that all students would begin the year wearing masks as a mitigating measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Students will be required to wear masks indoors when 6 feet of spacing is not achievable. Mr. Hanna committed to re-evaluating this plan by Labor Day in hopes that the Leon County data allows for us to relax the usage of masks.
Please see the information below from our Superintendent.

"Every time I am asked what is the most important job in the world, I always answer teacher! Teachers are the people who hand out life chances for everyone... Our society needs to value the fact that quality teachers inform and shape quality students who in the future become quality community members. This is what education is all about."
In an effort to meet the needs of our newest Bobcats, we are asking our families to sign up for a screening time with one of our Kindergarten teachers. The screenings will be brief, but will give us an idea of the Pre-Kindergarten skills of each child so we can best meet their needs as they enter Kindergarten. Please take a moment to sign up using the link below.
Please make plans to return your Digital Academy student's Chromebook during one of the scheduled times. All Chromebooks must be returned for the summer.

It truly does take a village to love on our Buck Lake kiddos. In an effort to make sure that everyone is receiving a little love during the week of Teacher & Staff Appreciation week, we are asking for donations of $20-$25 gift cards. Each gift card will be given to one of our amazing special area teachers, ESE teachers or support staff. We would normally have had homeroom classes adopt these friends but due to the current times did not this year. We would never want anyone to not feel the love, as Buck Lake has so much of

After some research and troubleshooting, the school district believed that the area code addition and change to cell phone protocol is causing the issues.
We are asking parents calling our schools using their cell phones to add "850" before the school's phone number.

To our LCS District Family-
Thank you for all of your support for our students, teachers and staff this year. As you may already be aware, Leon County Schools will not be offering the digital academies at each of our school sites in the 2021-2022 school year. All of our schools will host in-person learning.
We have officially made it to $30,000 for our Supporter Program! We not have enough money to build a fence on the Primary Playground, build a shade over the Pre-K Playground, and provide books for each classroom library. We will keep donations open through Friday. Any additional funds will further our support of our classroom libraries. https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fbucklakeshop.square.site%2fs%2fshop&c=E,1,iXpTdUr4mp39MYToPbZR-I3yvITMQhxy59reQk-ttFYI4kApvFlHW73W8TKwgp7YJifHXKG1Pgo7SMMEHjwjERoGWkUNMwtz5VO_A-i18sBJEw,,&typo=1
Our district has designated this week as "Wellness Week", in an effort to help bring focus to the mental and emotional health of our students before they head into Spring Break. During the week, we will be on the news each morning with a wellness message for the day. Our goal will be to provide our students with some tips, tools, and coping strategies for handling stress and strong emotions, as well as to let them know that we are here to support them.
